Hey does anyone know of any sci fi/ fantasy books with female protagonists that has absolutely no romance. Like she can think boys are cute and have a crush, but they have no major part in the plot or story and don’t move the story along

I just searched through my reading history which is mostly fantasy and I came up with The Emperor's Soul by Brandon Sanderson and Equal Rites by Terry Pratchett. I never realized how hard it was to find books fitting this description

So not 100% if this fits your criteria since I haven’t read it in a while, but maybe the Jackaby series by William Ritter? It’s fantasy not sci fi tho. There is a little crush kinda thing but I don’t remember it being a major plot point (iirc any significant impact is more like oh the characters care about each other and less specifically the romance)

annihilation i think fits this bill. there are some flashbacks to her husband but she is not a romantic person at all

The Godkiller series is mostly not boy-centered, she has a love interest but that’s not what the story is about at all, it’s mostly about family and cool magic

They might just be there for aesthetic effect. I’ve tried looking, and I can’t find any. But I really want to read more FL and be able to read them again, but they all have romance or smut, and I hate saying I don’t read female protagonists because I feel misogynistic and sexist as hell, but I’m sorry I just can’t find any in the genres I like

I haven’t read them but I’m pretty sure the Skyward series by Brandon Sanderson? He’s not big on romance ever, and it is a female protagonist

The Tombs of Atuan by Ursula K. LeGuin

Yeahhhh they all tend to have male protagonists, to the point where “I” has become a character in my mind and is a guy. I used to even say i didn’t like female protagonists for so long cause i really hate the way they are all written and I don’t like romance as a genre

Absolutely no romance whatsoever is really really hard to find. There are definitely authors who shy away from the romance aspect with female characters. Fantasy in general is just flooded with a bit too much Romantasy slop imo.

I know right, why can’t I find any of the good ones from when I was a kid with girls as the main characters as any grown up version where they don’t even think about boys and never rely on them

(She’s also gay and has a female love interest later in the series)

also Dragonflight by Anne McCaffrey, and I THINK A Song Below Water by Bethany C. Morrow has a crush in it but considering the fact that I don’t really remember that part it’s prob not super important
