Strange how people only seem to bring up "separate the art from the artist" when the artist is revealed to be abusive, racist, misogynistic, transphobic, etc. Your escapism is not worth the harm that artist has done to others

But that’s the only time people need to make the case. Nobody cares about separation of art and artist of a good person. You could just as well separate at all times, but people only notice when there is a negative association.

Plus in all fairness a lot of people just don’t look at who the author is. Yeah there are notorious authors like Rowling and Lovecraft, but I’ll admit I don’t research the author before I pick up every book.

I used to be one of these people. Art and artist should not be separated not only because it excuses the values of an artist, but also because it disconnects the historical and cultural importance of why the art is impactful. JKR is the more modern and safer example of why the concept sounds good, but if you apply that to say Stoicism or Les Miserables it becomes much more dangerous.
