recently read to shape a dragon’s breath and it was way more interesting than some other recent dragon books. i’m not even caring about “spice” or not i just think there’s other cultures out there waiting to draw inspiration from and you should try to tell a story rather than a tvtropes list.
I would respect SJM + other fantasy authors a lot more if they stuck to the original themes and concepts in the folklore they’re borrowing from and didn’t make it BORING. keep Tam Lin as a boy who was stolen by the fairy court and is going to be sacrificed to Hell because of his beauty. have Feyre specifically go seek him out, get pregnant, and only learn of his curse when she goes back to get an abortion. instead it’s so half-hearted
It especially annoys me because she tries SO hard to make Feyre seem like an empowered girl boss or whatever and it largely fails and comes across as super performative. But all she had to do was stick to the original concept of Janet/Feyre being sexually empowered, able to go and do whatever she wants, etc., and Tam Lin being the damsel in distress who’s trapped in Caterhaugh and needs to be rescued by his girlfriend
