Everyone who says this hasn’t paid attention to the same thing being said about other reading spaces for the past 20 years. And generally, it comes down to hating popular books, or thinly-veiled loathing for the romance genre. Booktok revived reading.
booktok has actually done irreparable damage to the reading community

i’d rather have someone who reads only smut or something than someone who’s proud the last time they read a book was 3rd grade

Literally and I’d never read a romance book but it makes me so happy seeing people get into reading people are too elitist about this

Reading ANYTHING is often an entry into reading diversely so elitism makes me insane

Literally and even if they don’t read diversely it’s better to read booktok books than nothing

Also there is a ton of diversity within booktok that it gets no credit for. Sure new and popular trends will get recycled to death, but there is so much unique fiction out there. I just read a mafia romance with great wheelchair user rep in it. You can’t judge genres and whatnot in sweeping claims because you discredit so much good within books doing so! Reading is always good and being elitist or superior about it hurts everyone.

Literally me. I got into back into reading because of the love hypothesis, and my love for reading has completely spiraled from there into so many different genres. Reading is for everyone!!!

I feel like both are in the same category to me. Content & quality matters. Otherwise you should count scrolling through twitter & yikyak as reading since you’re technically reading, it’s just that you’re probably reading a bunch of bs lol

u genuinely could count scrolling on twitter and yikyak as reading. maybe ur reading some bs, but ur reading nonetheless. sure quality is important, but quality is different for everyone. it’s subjective. writing is a creative art, and everything has quality to it if it finds the right audience

If the only thing you read are nutrition labels on the back of food items then you are NOT as well read as someone who’s read all of the classics and a healthy portion of modern novels. But yall go ahead and double down with the bs. 😂😂

No one is talking about food labels. That’s just you. Having a superiority complex about what you read does not make you better or smarter. If someone is reading books of any sort, they are expanding their reading prowess and knowledge. I can tell you didn’t read a damn thing we were actually talking about though, so go off with your classics dickriding. Sincerely, someone who just finished my MA in English and enjoys horror and smut as much as I do my medieval lit classes.

You’re the one lacking in reading comprehension. WHAT you read DOES matter. While you got your English degree, did you guys study twitter threads or novels, prose & pentameter or comic books & smut? Exactly. If you only read bs then you might as well have read nothing at all. Conspiracy theorists read papers on flat earth theories, but it’s bs so it did nothing to enrich their life or minds. You think it’s good to read bs, I think it’s a waste of time. We can agree to disagree though🤣

There’s a famous saying about arguing with fools though, so I will not be responding to this thread anymore. Please only read smut. According to several idiots it’s just as good as reading anything else.

“Several idiots” and it’s just you talking about yourself. I actually did read a good amount of graphic novels and comics in grad school. There is a ton to dig into when it comes to rhetorical choices in media that blends visuals and text. In fact, there is a whole dissertation called The Unflattening about it. But ya know what? Pls don’t respond. I don’t need to argue with someone who thinks they are better than others because of their genre choice. Closed minded middle school behavior 🤪
