
I wouldn’t call it severe, or even hate. It’s just a preference tbh. I feel the same way about it as like regular romance, classics, or self help books. They’re not for me personally, but I don’t care one way or another if people read, like, or hate them. I don’t know how that would make anyone better than anyone else, reading is reading. And I’ve actually seen a lot more talk online about getting people to read romantasy/giving recs than putting it down
The issue is sheer market oversaturation. It’s the exact same thing that happened after Tolkien released Lord of the Rings, when the market was flooded for decades with uninspired clones trying to mimic his style. Because series like A Court of Thorns and Roses and BookTok proved this specific formula makes massive amounts of money, everyone and their mother is rushing to write to an algorithm. The result is a flood of formulaic books relying on a lazy checklist of the exact same tropes.
