Rereading To kill a Mockingbird because my crush said I needed to. I hated it when I read it for school, apparently it's one of her favorite books.

I really love that book, but with the understanding that it is a narrative of black experience written from a white perspective. It’s best paired with books on the same topic written from black perspectives. I think that it is and will continue to be an important literary text, but it needs to be supplementary, not primary for learning about the Jim Crow era.

To kill a mockingbird is so mid, I respect the realism/accuracy of the writing but imo there’s no point reading fiction that just describes an ordinary scenario and adds nothing to it. Luckily it isn’t too long, still longer than several really good classics though iirc.

Lock in on what? If you mean the book, I've read 1/4th of it in the past 26 hours... and most of that was sleeping and working. I'll be done before my next shift

I'm enjoying it more this time... just got to the part where Scout is in 2nd grade and found out Atticus is defending a black guy and the kids are picking on her for it

Yeah, I had a problem with how they portrayed Atticus as some kind of hero to the kids when he's still racist, that's why I originally hated it. I've seen and read a lot about Jim Crow though...

I agree, as much as I think that Atticus was trying to make the right choices, he was still white within a system oppressive to Black peoples and didn’t recognise some of his implicit racism.

No, I got that part... but I don't see the relevance

He didn't even want to represent the black guy... he said the only reason he did it is because he could never hold his head high again. He would lose all authority and self respect for abandoning a client, even if he believed he would lose.

10 tens? Also who says cooch? I'm doing it because someone who seems knowledgeable and enthusiastic said that my perspective from MIDDLE SCHOOL was too young to appreciate their favorite book. I'll try to get her to read lord of the flies

I heard Go Set a Watchman, which wasn’t published in the author’s lifetime, takes a more mature perspective of Atticus’s racism. I haven’t read it but I think it’s abt an adult Scout realizing he isn’t as much of a hero as she thought as a child? But it was written first
