I was a big fan of Ellen Hopkins when I was in middleschool. An OG reader before they started trying to ban her books. My favorite challenged book is probably the picture of Dorian grey

the bluest eye is so good, surprisingly short! I really love Out of Darkness (it’s ya but reads like an adult book tbh), gender queer is another good one. I took a YA and a children’s books class at school and we specifically read banned literature, our entire list was genuinely wonderful
