Final book total from my long 4 day weekend: 2 full length books, 2 short stories, 9 Doctor Who radio dramas. Also thanks to the person last week who suggested Novelwave for audiobooks! You’re the best!He as such a recognizable voice and he’s so expressive. Hearing his audio adventures I ca see his face or body movements when he talks it’s so good. And yeah Pipers voice has changed a little but hey it’s been 20 years. She is still amazing and her chemistry with ecclestone is noticeable even in audio
Absolutely! Eccleston is also one of the ones who basically always voices himself as well. Same with Mcgann. No offense to some of the imitators they bring in, Jacob Dudman played Eleven so well I didn’t realize it wasn’t him until the end of one of his audio dramas, but it’s like Eccleston never left. Especially his chemistry with Billie Piper. Outside of her voice sounding a bit different now, it really does feel like their recent ones are right out of 2005.
And they 𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 gave Nine his Time War speech in The Last Days of The Powell Estate! Such incredible delivery! Also, I’ve always loved the darker episodes of the show as well as the darker tone of things like Torchwood, and since the show hasn’t given us many in recent years it’s nice to know that the radio dramas still will!
Yes!! I need to listen to the last two because I’ve been so busy but I’m absolutely loving the Nine/Rose stories because it’s so refreshing. While I don’t have much of a problem with the newer seasons it is missing the little things that made 9/10/11 so good. They could get darker when it called for it. There were many times they’d get the look in their eyes that showed exactly why they were called “the oncoming storm” and I hope the next season brings that back with whoever the next doctor is
Potential spoilers for TLDOTOE Yeah the news seasons 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 get dark at times, but even then it wasn’t on the same level as something like Silence In The Library for example. But the idea of an invisible killer who messes with you for fun, can cause rips in the fabric of reality, and can travel in time is so freaking good. The whole story was chilling to listen to. In general I wish the writing for the show was as good as the writing for the audio stories.
Me too. The audio adventures are so reminiscent of the early days of the modern show. I’m not sure where they went wrong with the writing but I wish they could go back to the 2005-10 era. Some of it I’ve read is people feel they’ve gotten too good with effects and stuff (Disney era for sure) and they’re focusing too much on visuals and not story. But with the audios all they have is the story so it has to be entertaining
Also apparently we might finally get the 𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥 𝘋𝘪𝘦𝘥 𝘈𝘨𝘢𝘪𝘯 novel that was planned over a decade ago. I mean outside of the continuity in Series 6, they basically never acknowledge The Miracle, and we never got any answers as to how Jack put an end to it. Supposedly it was started after The Exodus Code, but was shelved when the Torchwood IP got axed for a while, before they brought it back.
Also apparently Eccleston is just as nice in person as you think he is. Despite the horrible treatment he received from RTD and a few other production members, which is why he quit the show, he never held any resentment for the series as a whole or its fans. Also apparently he was getting close to doing some kind of special appearance on the show before they brought back RTD. But with RTD potentially out of the show going forward, maybe we’ll finally get that!
Update: finally went back and finished all of 9DA. Metropolis was the last one I had to listen to and that ending. Oh my goodness he played it so well because obviously he can’t tell Dreyfus 𝘸𝘩𝘺 she should leave, but you can tell he really wishes he could. Also just a great ending since they’d been dancing around that topic the whole time.
