I know we love to still talk about Harry Potter despite JKR’s evil messages because “my nostalgia” or because “she’s allowed to have her views” but I’m really wondering how some of y’all are gonna keep that up now that she’s literally quoting Mein Kampf.

Like I’ve been reminding people for years that she is friends with neo Nazis but get told that I’m exaggerating every time by someone who still wears Slytherin pants. I wasn’t exaggerating. And y’all who were happy to sacrifice trans folks’ freedoms to buy the new special editions better look inward. Because you’re funding someone who is actively trying to tell you they are a Nazi.

Though people who both support her person and like her work are vastly the minority. They’re just a very vocal and social media present minority so it feels like they’re more prevalent. Much more common are the people like myself who think she’s a shit human being. I won’t support her personally or buy new from her, but neither am I going to pitch my battered and ancient hp copies, they do have nostalgic value and they meant something to me growing up

personally, I keep my books because they used to be my mom’s so they have sentimental value. however, I don’t plan to buy any of her works or support her in any other way.

Idk what you mean by this? JKR has known to be a bigoted crazy lady for years, nothing has changed about her or my stance. As long as those Slytherin pants were purchased from a fan and not an official HP website and people just keep reading the books they bought 15 years ago instead of getting new ones, I literally do not see the issue. Seems like you just want something to complain about.

ngl even before jkr came out as transphobic, a dark mark tattoo is sus. why do you want the wizard nazi logo on your body?

I’m sure there are used books on Etsy you can get if you want to. It’s not a crime to like a franchise you like or think is good, and whether people buy it or not based on whether they see my hufflepuff sweatshirt is not on me, unless i directly told them to go do so. I’ve never seen people do this with other authors. Am I promoting Neil Gaiman because I like to read the copy of Coraline I have in my house sometimes? Christ.

I mean I think it’s like, if you had posters/merch of like Jeffery Dahmer or Hitler or someone like that, people would look at you weird, like why are you proudly displaying this? Coming from someone who also hasn’t donated their copies (but would never wear merch anymore), it’s more of the fact that you’re still platforming her and saying “I don’t care that she’s killing trans people, I’m still going to proudly support her work”

It normalizes her beliefs and keeps her relevant, which gives her power to continue causing harm and spreading hate. It shows other people who agree with her that they’re not alone and makes them feel more comfortable financially supporting her, even if you don’t. It makes people who may not totally agree with her, but love the series and want to keep engaging with it, more comfortable doing so

That would be true if I was wearing merch OF JK Rowling. You listed examples of people wearing merch of ACTUAL SERIAL KILLERS/Mass murderers. I have not seen a single decent person who would wear merch of JK Rowling’s face on it. Wearing merch of a fantasy series ≠ I support the author and all her actions. Again, if I have a sweatshirt that says Green Eggs and Ham or American Gods, am I promoting the ideals and beliefs of Dr. Seuss and Neil Gaiman respectively? Touch grass.

If I have a fanmade Harry Potter movie poster with the faces of Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint on it, would I still be supporting JK? Or does that mean I’m automatically in love with all three of those actors and support everything they do? They’re all antitrans, does that counteract the “anti trans support” of owning a movie poster? Or does it simply mean I just like a fucking series and it’s not that deep without money involved.

If people notice my shirt and ask about the series and somehow don’t know who that is, I can just tell them the context and say maybe don’t buy x from this offer because y. If they are my friends or decent allies, they will listen. If not, they were probably going to do it anyway, or do something else like eat at a Chick Fil A or something because they already don’t care.

A huge public figure that is relevant to our literary space QUOTING FUCKING HITLER is not just something to complain about. It’s incredibly important news, especially when so many people still support her. If you’re not mad about this, whether you’ve already written her off or not, then I worry about you.

Especially when she has stated time and time again that people wearing merch/engaging publicly with the fandom is a sign that people agree with her and that she should keep going on this crusade and speak up when others are obviously too afraid to. Her views are too public and well known for it to be assumed that you aren’t aware of them, and to publicly support her properties is to publicly support her. She’s made that clear herself

I mean obviously you can do whatever you want. But just know that if you wear merch out and about, you’re warning trans people and trans allies that you’re not a safe person. I’d say JKR is a unique case that not even Neil Gaiman falls under because of just how vocal and public she is with her hate. Obv Gaiman is a piece of shit and I won’t be financially supporting him, but I could def see how most people not plugged into the book world wouldn’t know of his controversies.

I’m not saying you have to do in depth research of every author you read to make sure they’re not problematic. It’s forgivable to read gaiman and not know what he did. He isn’t staking his belief systems on the continuing popularity of his works the way JKR is. If you’re part of the HP fandom in any capacity and aren’t aware of the harm JKR is doing, that’s willful ignorance at that point and that’s no longer an excuse. That’s the big difference between JKR and Gaiman or Seuss or anyone else

It’s really hard for me to say what I want to say with the short comments of yikyak so I’m worried I’m not explaining myself properly. tl;dr: JKR herself has given the ultimatum. publicly supporting HP means you support her transphobia and misogyny and hate. even if you’re not financially supporting her, you’re silently affirming that it’s alright if you do. obviously you are not responsible for other peoples’ actions, even in response to what you wear, but I for one certainly wouldn’t want to

align myself publicly with a transphobe of her caliber, even indirectly via her work (though once again, and I can’t state this enough, she herself has said supporting her work is supporting her. she herself made it clear that affirming the art is affirming the artist)
