I liked the Ciaphas Cain books. Miss me with the Horus Heresy stuff tho, I don’t have the time or shelf space for all that. If you like readings of fan works, I recommend A Vox in the Void on youtube (if you don’t mind humor in your grimdark, check out their Gav & Bob or A Proppa Krumpin series)

There’s so many places to start, you could just pick any of them. The old RPG books do have a lot of narrative stuff about the setting and lore that can give you a good idea about it. Dark Heresy 1st edition RPG is worth reading just for the critical hit tables.
