I need to know if I’m too woke for this but isn’t it weird if the one character in a book who’s stated to be Black curses in every other sentence and is “sassy” for lack of better term

You’re not too woke in fact a lot of the book community has pointed this out. I hate when they do that to us we’re so much more than just “sassy” and we have good vocabulary. It’s a stereotype and I hate it.

No you’re not weird. It cooooould be nothing, but also the sassy black character, or woman especially, is fairly common

Thanks for the input everyone! I posted this before I finished the book. So I finished and none of the characters had any real development and all felt one-dimensional. There were other characters of color, and some characters didn’t have any specified race

It’s an odd thing because as a black woman who doesn’t fit the ‘stereotype’ it sucks trying to find commonality because most black people don’t even act that way, that’s just what the media portrays 😕

So I’m not sure if it’s just an issue with the author and how they write their characters, or if they had some kind of bias (unconscious or otherwise). Maybe both? But it is weird that the one explicitly Black girl is “sassy” and calls someone a “damn fool” in every other sentence

Also I want to point out I’m not calling her a girl to be demeaning, but the majority of the characters are 16-19 and she was still in high school. The author is also a middle aged white woman so it is possible that she has some biases or is just racist. At the very least, she should study how to write Black characters and hire Black sensitivity readers to point out stuff like this
