Hey just FYI in Texas, if you’re a teacher, whatever books you have in your classroom is now considered a school library and the books have to be logged into a spreadsheet and you have to keep track of what books the kids read. If you want to add books-

I knew all the shitty overreach stuff, but you can ONLY have books that are the right level too???? How is a kid with less reading skills supposed to practice? How is one with above average skills? How is taking away the range in not just difficulty but also topic supposed to help anyone? Ik im preaching to the choir here but this is the stupidest most irresponsible shit and I hate those who perpetuate it

To your library, you have to get them approved by the school board. In my district, they will vote three times a year. This includes the actual school library. If I parent had a problem with a book in your classroom, it has to be removed. They can also request to see which books their child has checked out. The school board has to get the list within 30 days of their voting period. This means that parents have a say in book the children read bc we all know that parents have a degree in education

It’s literally so fucked up. when I was a freshman in high school I was reading at a college level and I think if my teachers were forced to make me read things that were at a freshman level instead of things that actually pushed my skills, I probably would have lost my love for reading. It would’ve become formulaic and boring, just reading for a grade.

And have read every book ever, right? The books also must be for the level that you teach. Meaning, all of mine have to be for freshmen. Many teachers at my school also use their shelves as their personal library or even for decoration as kids rarely check out the books bc parents don’t read to their kids. Some districts have forced teachers to remove all books from their shelves. My district assured us that our parents are reasonable, but last year, a parent complained and the juniors weren’t

Allowed to read Brave New World. This is so beyond fucked up and parents should trust educators to know what books your child should or should not read depending on the content and their age level.

No exactly like I’m supposed to push the kids to grow academically and I can’t do that with books only at their grade level. Plus most kids aren’t reading at a ninth grade level, probably closer to 6th grade

Like they’d rather regulate pieces of paper glued together that have knowledge or fictional worlds within them rather than literal weapons and shootings happening in schools over and over and over again every year

Make it part of an assignment for them to get a free library card from their local library where they will have access to anything

Also make them read Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. I believe that’s on their level. Explain to them that book are not just paper and glue that they can learn for themselves not just what they are told to learn.

I can suggest it but I can’t make them go somewhere and the curriculum dictates that they read Lord of the Flies and there’s not room for anything else :(((

Could you have them read it and maybe write something short like 1 page for bonus?

I mean I could have it as extra credit. I just can’t make them. Like they dictate what we have them read even if It’s an article, short story, poem, etc. we don’t always have time to add in other stuff
