It’s like the best selling genre if it keeps the spaces I love alive I won’t complain. I read fantasy but certainly not just fantasy. It rubs me the wrong way some of these comments seem to think we are better than the people that just read romance. I wouldn’t look down on someone for something so minuscule, feels like gatekeeping a community that requires those types of readers to survive. No hate, I’m open to discussion, just feels mean.
I’m a big fantasy nerd and can’t stand reading a book w/ romance, but idc when someone reads romance since they’re reading what they like. It’s only a problem when they tell me “oh I’m a fantasy nerd too!” and then we talk abt it or they recc me stuff and they only talk about romantasy. just say you’re a romantasy reader. I even say I don’t want to read ANY romance & twice they’ve insisted with “oh this one doesn’t have much romance” and then I have to DNF, which I HATE doing.
it's really an issue of pushiness & dishonesty abt what they read, but I've only had that experience with romance readers (so far). I've also had people (primarily romantasy readers) say they want to talk abt the fantasy elements but then completely disengage from the convo. or not want to hear any criticism for a book they like even if I like it too. this may be common just bc of its popularity, but I don't take reces from people who read primarily romance anymore because of bad experiences.
