Typos, juvenile writing, too many cliches . basically anything that takes you out of the story and makes you think about technical details of the book

3rd act break up, shadow daddies, mmc with no character/unrealistic personality, Mary Sue FMCS, books that copy Red Queen, tiny ‘I’m so little’ fmcs, characters who lose their entire personality when they fall in love

Characters who are just completely unlikable to the point where I can’t continue reading. Ex: Celaena from ToG, I hated her

-short chapters (but more so when authors don’t know how to place chapter breaks) -romances where they have no emotional chemistry -forcing romances where platonic relationships would be so much more impactful and/or natural -romances with height differences -romances where the mmc is super big and muscular

A “strong female character”. In most YA books, especially fantasies, ALL THE WOMEN ARE THE SAME. Like, please, I get you wanna empower women or whatever but would we not have the same exact woman character type in every book?

This is actually why I’ve strayed from reading normal books and started reading manga more. The characters are just so much better and dynamic in mangas compared to regular YA/fantasy books

Really? I feel like most of the ya and na fantasies I’ve read started off with the fmc “weaker” and stuff and throughout the book/series progressively got stronger after working on it. I feel like I only read like one or two books where the fmc was already “strong” at the beginning

I’m saying more emotionally strong woman, I couldn’t care less if she was a physically strong woman. I think most female personalities in those books is that they’re tough or cold or strong and I’m just sick of it. Like, give me a soft caring fmc who BECOMES strong or who keeps her softness even when she gets her strength. Maybe it’s just me, tho

I feel like most YA protagonists are pretty well written and romantasy is the genre that tends to skimp on good character writing. I agree with you

Does it still bother you if it’s in different POVs, it specifies whose POV the chapter is in, but it also has a real chapter title?

i do not like when it specifies, it should be obvious by the action, and i do not like chapter titles at all in any capacity. but i understand that’s a hot take
