I have discovered that dark romance may not be for me. Yikes. I’ll stick to my rom coms and romantasy for now

Some of the newer stuff is basically just abuse romance (which I’m not a fan of but I’m not gonna tell folks not to enjoy it either). But a lot of dark romance I like is dark in setting and theme but the romance is still good and wholesome and consensual.

I know certain dark romances (such as those with sa tw) are great for those who experienced sa as it is used as a coping mechanism.

Yeah I’m definitely getting that now. The one I read was a master/slave one and it was so gross. I don’t get how it’s popular

Miranda Grant is an author who writes dark romance! She has a section on her website titled "Understanding Dark Romance" that explains one of the many reasons a person may enjoy the genre. Highly recommend checking it out!

I think that’s what I’d prefer. The lack of consent and autonomy really turned me off. (Also the pedophilia and homophobia.) I can do dark stories but the relationship itself has to be wholesome and fully consensual or I’m not gonna like it

Omg what dark romance did you read with homophobia etc??? That’s such a shame. A lot of dark romances I’m reading these days are explicitly lgbtq+ (Her Soul to Take & series were recent on my list). I don’t love lack of consent in my dark romance at all. It’s why I write cozy slow burn dark romance 😅

Honestly I was not aware that dark romance was a very queer friendly genre at all. But anyways, the was the Captive Prince Trilogy by C. S. Pacat. It was a queer mlm romance, but the way it was written and handled reeked of homophobia despite it taking place in a queernormative world. It was just a really gross representation of queer men and as a queer man myself it made me incredibly uncomfortable

I knew it was going to be bad because it was master/slave but I wasn’t expecting the straight up pedophilia. But unfortunately it was the only queer dark romance I could find. And it has definitely pushed me away from the genre

Ahhh yeah I’ve heard very mixed things about that series. Some queer folks I know love it, some hate it. Dark romance is VERY queer friendly in indie publishing spaces! I know a ton of lgbtq+ dark romance authors. That doesn’t mean there isn’t some upsetting content mixed in though.
