I work at a library and this book is somewhat popular. I worry that the people who read it put all this pressure on themselves to "maximize" their twenties and beat themselves up if they don't reach their "fullest potential." Your twenties are supposed to be messy, because you're still figuring out who you are and establishing your own independence. Everyone has a different path and comparing yourself to your age cohort will always make you feel like shit. Your twenties do NOT define you

I hate books and messages that stress your 20s as the most important stage of your life and if you don’t do huge great things you’re failing. Most folks I know have not figured out how to be a legit functional adult till late 20s early 30s. I’m late 20s with mostly 30s friends, and my 30s friends are having a much better time than anyone I ever knew in their 20s. 20s is still so young compared to your whole life, and if all you did in them is grow into yourself, you’re doing fine.

There’s a more updated book that’s a red and blue cover. I don’t understand the hate, I thought it was really good

What are the main themes of the book? Like what angle do they take on people’s 20s?

Ima be honest just considering the fact the author included that they have a PhD on the front cover makes me feel like this advice isn’t for everyone

same. i worked at my college library and the amount of people checking this one out was worrisome. especially in today’s climate that we are graduating into. this book was published 13 years ago based on stories and anecdotes even older than that. i was recommended it by my fave professor and all it did was give me dread and anxiety.

Oh wow I just looked up the publication date. Yeah that world doesn't exist anymore. Not to diminish the struggles of twentysomethings who graduated into the Great Recession, but I would say we have a LOT more to worry about - shit job market, this country's rapid descent into fascism, the rise of AI and how it's being imposed onto literally everything, an even greater gap between the rich and everyone else

It's impossible to "embrace your twenties!!" when our futures were already stolen from us before it even had a chance to begin

It just gives different pieces of advice for people in their 20’s. The author is a psychologist who specifically works with the age group, so she cites some personal examples with her clients + empirical data

No one says if you don’t do great things in your 20’s you’re failing. Wouldn’t you want advice and guidance though? I’m 22 and I feel like I have 0 stability. That book though gave me some reassurance and tips on how to navigate and what to prioritize

People say that all the time, especially in advice books and seminars. Just because you haven’t experienced it doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen. I haven’t read this book, but I get that vibe from many other similar titles.

“People say that all the time” “from many other similar titles” this seems like a very niche problem there’s no way there’s this many examples of either 😭

Okay just keep digging at someone else’s experience because you liked one book I guess. Weird fucking thing to do.
