I feel like the Twilight romance would be more obviously creepy if instead of a hundred and something Edward was like, forty You don't see a lot of hundred year olds perving on high schoolers but you probs have a very clear frame of reference for forty

That’s a solid point actually. It’s hard to conceptualize when the age gap is so large it’s not even realistically possibly

it’s also hard when they appear to be 17. if he was to look 100 or to look 40, yikes we would have a problem. but since they don’t, we don’t seem to mind

It could also be intentional. Since Edward is over 100 he has already presumably lived an entire life and watched someone he loved die. He likely has come to terms with how he can interact with mortals. As a 40 year old none of that has happened. Still creepy though

We tend to get much more mad at characters when their shitty actions are within our frame of reference. Like, nobody's morally outraged at Pennywise for eating children cause it's so out-there. But if he was rude to wait staff you'd be like "jesus, this guy's a real asshole huh?"

Okay you lost me. Of course eating children is objectively bad and anyone who reads that can easily conceptualize WHY that’s bad. 😭 it’s not like if you read both of these things happening, you’d think he was a worse person for being rude to wait staff.

That's not at all what I think, of course the first thing is worse. But because the second is more relatable and within the realm of our experience, it produces a more viscerally negative reaction. We can watch horror villains murder people and think "oh that incorrigible old scamp up to his old bag of tricks!" because it's so far outside our everyday reality

I think a clown eating children produces a pretty viscerally negative reaction for me idk though maybe it’s because im not a sociopath.🧍‍♀️

probably why pervs produce tv shows where students get with teachers or just older people in general and people bat an eye less bc the actor playing the high schooler is 30

I came here to say this. I don’t think it really matters how old he actually is because he looks 17 (when it comes to conceptualizing the age gap, ofc it’s creepy regardless). To Bella (the POV character) he’s 17 so to the audience he’s 17 and I don’t think it’d be perceived any different if he’s been 17 for 40 years or 100
