For science fiction I recommend the three body problem series by Cixin Liu. The Ender Saga by Orson Scott is also good imo. For fantasy I recommend Babel by R.F. Kuang. Leigh Bardugo’s Ninth House duology is solid too I think

Sandersons other series the stormlight archive is 10x better than mistborn, but if you want to avoid him completely check out the shadow of what was lost, jade city, or dandelion dynasty. Those are all more epicy/complex, if you want slightly simpler (but still highly enjoyable) the lies of Locke Lamora (fantasy heist but done much better than mistborn) , Riyria revelations, of blood and fire, or the rage of dragons are all super fun. Assassins apprentice and first law also have a huge yes!

For sci fi, I recommend Isaac Asimov Foundations series or Christopher Paolini’s To Sleep in a Sea of Stars. For fantasy maybe try Raybearer, Children of Blood and Bone, or Cherry (like thriller fantasy almost?)
