I’m tryna buy a new car. So my three options is a 2011 Mercury Grand Marquis 51k miles for $5800, 2023 certified used Subaru Solterra for 21k after tax rebates 17k miles or a brand new VW Jetta for 25k. Let me know if any of yall have one of the 3.

Only car I ever regretted selling was my 08 Grand Marquis. That’s a good price too. Reliable easy to work on. Driving first class.

just because it has a v8 doesn’t mean the maintenance is expensive and as a proud mercury owner mine has never let me down

Grand marquis with 51k miles is basically new, I’d do that. Absolutely do not buy the VW, it’ll be good for a few years but once you gotta start fixing it it’s gonna be expensive and depreciation will hit you like a truck

See if the MGM has an aluminum part where the top radiator hose meets the intake manifold. If so it’s a steal at $5800 if all else is good. There was a common issue with the panther platform with this part since it was originally plastic. If it has a plastic bit you may want to keep in mind that. 2k repair bill is coming your way especially if u live in an area with cold winters because with age the plastic with crack and lead to a coolant leak. Had to have it done on my 98 Lincoln town car.

If you get the Grand marquis, I’d use some of the extra money to get some Kicker KS 6x8s for the doors, 6x9s for the rear package tray, an Alpine head unit (apparently Alpines don’t clip the sound like most units do to save factory speakers), and some quality window tint so you aren’t in a greenhouse. Btw I’d recommend buying adapters for the speakers so you don’t cut factory wires and buy the ‘definitely legal’ Alpine parking brake safety radio lockout bypass device from ebay.

I’m def eyeing on the MGM, but my dad said the maintenance would be expensive because it has a v8, but I know these things have the most primitive technology in them

But every mechanic in America has worked on one. Parts are abundant. Plus you drive it it doesn’t drive you (too much tech is a thing). But that’s just me you do what you think is best. I loved mine. People move over when you come up behind them too.

Yeah maintenance is really cheap since almost all of the parts are interchangeable with the crown Vic’s

Until the coils go at 120k maintenance will be non existent lol. Only expensive part of a V8 is gas. Depending on the rear gears you can get high 20s mpg with easy driving, I think exhaust and a tune could help with gas mileage as well. If it’s a handling package or tow package you’ll be looking at 20mpg even which is a bit rough. The smoothness and comfort makes it worth it though

But my dad bought it for $5k with 86k miles, passed down to me with 150k miles and now it’s at 189k. With the previous issue being the only major one we encountered. Do keep in mind (especially where they salt in the winter) that with age does come issues like dry rotted rubber and corsion steering assembly and such. But if it has no major issues when u buy this car will serve you faithfully with the same general maintenance that any other car would need.

Dude didn’t respond and all the other panthers in my area are clapped, the Jetta might be the strongest contender atm

Damn that sucks but yea if you want new the jetta seems like a good option but I’d also look at the Corolla, civic and Mazda 3 since they are in a similar price range. Also if you still wanna go used some General Motors cars with the 3800 v6 are reliable and very similar to the grand marquis drive like clouds.

Ain’t no way every single town car, marquis, and Vic are clapped. Someone’s grandma had to have died recently 😂 I’d second the GM with a 3800 v6 or the new Mazda. We have loved our Mazdas, they still have a real transmission (not a CVT), real shifter, and real climate controls. I really don’t understand why anyone would buy a modern Volkswagen other than it not having a CVT like the other economy cars

I had a Mazda3 but imma be honest, it was a complete rattle box. The dealers probably weren’t paid enough to even rip open the dash. I’ve had multiple vws in the family and they all were good. I liked Mazdas older products like the older 3 and 6s but this one was a complete cost cut fiasco

I’ve had so many vws in the family and they all went 200k with no issues or even rust. (Northeastern region)
