My mom got diagnosed with celiac recently, can anyone give me tips on how to support her? I know I can’t do much when I don’t live nearby, but I want to do what I can

I have celiac but I was diagnosed in elementary school so I’m not sure how helpful my early symptoms will be. I had failure to thrive (not growing) and nausea/vomiting after meals. As I got older I still had absorption issues leading to iron-deficient anemia. My main tip is to be aware of hidden gluten in foods. Gluten is not just in wheat, it’s also in things like malt and barley, and it doesn’t have to be listened in the allergen section of packaged food.

my sister was diagnosed celiac a few years ago! one way you can help her is help find alternatives that aren’t awful texturally? also, depending on where she lives, there might be restaurants nearby that are celiac safe. my sister has found a number of restaurants in her area that are for people with celiac, so none of their food is at risk of contamination or anything. that’s very area dependent, but it’s nice to have a safe food option if possible :)

Also, if anyone with celiac wants to share their early symptoms feel free! It’s something I now know I need to watch out for since my mom has the gene

My mom actually went keto in the past. I’m really hoping that’s not what she chooses to do to manage it because, while it works for some people, she was absolutely miserable. I might buy some new utensils and cookware so I can make some gluten free treats to bring when I visit

Oh dang, sorry about that. I didn’t know it could have a bad effect on people like that 😞

Carbs are our bodies’ main source of energy so many people can’t adjust to a keto diet very well. My mom has thyroid problems and also struggles with hypoglycemia so I think if just wasn’t a good thing for her in general 💀
