it’s so annoying how much requires a concrete diagnosis. to get accommodations for school i need a diagnosis and to get paid leave from work i need a diagnosis but like?? they don’t fucking know what’s going on with me

i don’t have a diagnosis cause i’m a goddamn medical mystery and the placeholder diagnosis they gave me isn’t “serious” enough to justify leave so i keep going to work and running the risk of getting hurt because i can’t take the time off i need to learn how to navigate because i don’t have a serious enough diagnosis even though im fucking mostly blind

As someone who works in student accommodations and has my own workplace accommodations, this is not true and I’m sorry they’re treating you like it is. You do not need a Dx to be considered disabled by the ADA, which protects you in these scenarios. Have your doctor speak to your functional limitations only, not a guess Dx. Have them say why their recommendations would alleviate problems you’re having

Before I got a diagnosis for my physical issues, my accommodation advisor literally said they can’t do anything if I don’t have a diagnosis

Legally, this isn’t true. Unfortunately many offices aren’t in compliance. The ADA was specifically written for instances where they can’t figure out what’s wrong or there’s no name for it but you’re still disabled by your condition. We have specific training for these situations in my office.

Honestly wish I had known this sooner. I went like, four years of fighting with the office, having to rely on a professors good graces to scrap by, before finally getting an actual doctors note before my literal last semester

I’m really sorry this happened to you and this was your Uni experience. If it’s any consolation this would not fly in my office at all and you be treated the same as a student with a dozen letters and proper diagnoses from top hospitals

you don’t need a diagnosis?? i’ve been sitting here waiting for my genetic testing to go through to get a diagnosis to send to my schools accommodations department so i can go back to school with a course replacement, but not having to wait months for that would be so awesome!!

No, if your doctor can speak to how your symptoms are majorly impacting one or more of your major life functions (you can look up this list) you are legally disabled. No law requires a diagnosis. But you are legally disabled and protected if you can demonstrate MLFs being impaired. It just makes it “easier” for departments so they do it by dx (although I don’t really agree with that take and it opens up legal liability)
