I have sciatica (L5S1) and my bf and I are both on antidepressants. I just found out he wouldn’t want to have kids naturally cause of this 1/16 chance of passing on T1 diabetes. IVF can help. Anyone know anything anecdotally?

It’s insanely expensive, but yes it can be done. I know someone who had to bc her and her husband were both carriers of a gene that causes severe polycystic kidneys (they found out when their first pregnancy was deemed incompatible with life and she carried it to term and it died a few hours later). Normal ivf with good insurance is $25,000. With the addition of genetic screening you’re looking at a huge cost. But if it’s worth it to you go for it

All I saw online was that IVF doctors would calculate risk scores for the embryos and help us choose the lowest risk ones

your doctor will better be able to explain the risks and likely outcomes based on your specific situation much better than anyone else speculating. ivf can be innnnncrediblyyyy expensive, so if it is something you’re seriously considering, i would start saving money now.

I would definitely recommend researching this on your own because it is all too individual to get a solid answer on a nationwide anonymous forum. Look up IVF in your state (or where you plan to live when trying for kids) as well as other options like adoption, donor eggs/sperm/embryos, and genetic alterations through IVF (as well as the ethics and cons of each). This is something you should be researching and including your bf with if you are serious about him also.

There are options but all have their own risks and costs. Making a pro con list could be helpful after finding local costs and available resources

Thank you:) we agreed no kids till 30 and we’re both 25. We are still kinda new and we have lots of time. But it may be something we need to save for in a significant way like for a house. I think I’d have family that would help. And wealthy divorced grandparents who aren’t generous, but will leave inheritance. They are healthy 77yo’s
