I get that plenty of mental health diagnoses do technically qualify as chronic illnesses, but like… there’s already a mental illness community and a neurodivergence one, why do people choose to post here about strictly-psychiatric issues?

just feels disingenuous to come in here pretending like “chronic illness” doesn’t primarily refer to physical disability. is it really too much to ask that even one community stays specifically focused on *physical* health issues?

Who here is talking only about psychiatric illness? I have bipolar which is probably like one of the psych conditions most like chronic illness but I still wouldn’t be in a chronic illness community for it and I’ve never seen anyone in the BP community do so either.

I don’t mean to sound like an ass to those people but especially since society is so focused on mental health right now (AS THEY SHOULD BE) it’s nice to have a space where the focus is off of that for a moment and focusing on the physical side of things. ESPECIALLY since so many of us are gaslit into believing our physical pain is just in our heads or mental illness

exactly. and I’m mentally ill and neurodivergent myself on top of the physical health issues, when I wanna talk brain stuff in particular then I post in the designated groups 🤷

Same. I have the space to complain about issues with depression, anxiety, and ADHD/autism. I also have a space to talk about how every part of my body is fucking broken in some way

and I don’t really see the inverse happening. I feel like people wouldn’t be all that receptive to me making posts centering my rheumatoid arthritis in the mental health community, even though I could justify it by nature of how relevant medical trauma contributes to my cptsd

someone made a post to this community yesterday centered on cptsd with no mention of physical chronic illness, but it’s not my intent to pick on them in particular, I just see similar posts here on a monthly-ish basis

and yeah, cptsd and adhd both technically affect me at the bodily level too, but it’s like you said—I post to Mental Health or Neurodivergent when I wanna chat about those issues
