As an unbiased fan i can understand why teams wouldnt schedule hard OOC games. Why even risk possibly losing “harder games” when you can schedule an fcs game, get a free win and hope you win the ones you have to play. But you also HAVE to win the non OOC

And before anyone says anything i actually am an lsu fan and hate bama, they shouldnt be in the playoffs this year. I just dont like the precedent that is being set bc i WANT to see big OOC games in the future

Not a Texas fan, but I will say I highly respect their AD & Sarks decision to play difficult Non-Con like Michigan, Ohio State, Notre Dame & Bama. Makes the sport alot better

I agree, but also the solution to this would be the good teams scheduling hard OOC. If you put BTA in hard OOC, that massively helps to offset any bad in conference losses. Also, if you lose the hard OOC games (ie top 10), that doesn’t hurt you as much as losing to a bad in conference team either. I feel like programs that view themselves at the top should use that as a power move. Nothing makes more of a statement to the CFP than putting BTA both in and out of conference against tough opponents

But I do acknowledge the risk that comes with that as well. One too many losses and you’re out. I do think that a 9-3 Alabama that blew out Oklahoma but lost to someone like Oregon or OSU by 1-3 points would probably make it into the playoffs though

True, but the committee changes everything they look for to put teams in year to year and the only definite thing that matters to them each year is the win column. I dont actually think anyone is going to cancel big OOC games (I’d hope not at least bc thatd be dumb af). I can just understand why teams wouldnt be as incentivized to play any “big games”

Last year alabama was in bc SOS and “oh well fsu’s qb was hurt”. Maybe the fsu qb situation was more what they looked at but they cant say it matters so much last year to put them in over 13-0 FSU and not care about SOS this year for an SMU team that hasnt beat a ranked team yet. However, i get they need a 12th team and SMU doesnt deserve to be punished for playing the extra game

I think they need to refine the system they use to pick and make it a mix between analytical and human selection. Right now it seems like they really didn’t know what they were looking for lol. It was also kinda a crazy year to try a new format without any solidified selection system since there were so many upsets

Agreed. The way conference championships play into selection is one of the things they need to really look into

Using analytics would still probably leave bama out just because those two losses would hurt them so bad that they will stop drop below most the rest of the field
