Is it normal to start a new job in software development and they say you are going to train and shadow but every time you ask they dont have anything for you to do?

Imagine it’s senior year, you’re taking a big course load, you have a thesis/senior project looming, and then your prof says, surprise, you need to let this high schooler shadow you and mentor them. That’s what having an intern/new grad is like.

Currently me. I went through training last week and had nothing to do so far. I’ll probably do some coding my second or third week.

Well the guy I am supposed to be shadowing actually doesn’t have the amount of work you are thinking he does. During the team meetings we have he pretty much reports that all he is working on is busy work plus like one or two other small things that I was able to shadow (maybe amounting to 3 hours of work tops). Also Im not like a helpless intern or something, I have some experience we are just using a highly specific program that isnt used in other places.
