I need y’all’s opinions.. Is being a professor a good dream? Or should I just work in corporate or government for the rest of my life? I’m conflicted because I want to be a professor, but money ..

if being a professor sounds appealing to you/type of work you want to do then absolutely follow that path. Your gut knows what is best

As somebody working on my Ph.D. Who has lots of friends in academia, let me have a very real conversation with you. Being a professor is actually not at all about being a teacher. It’s about research. If you enjoy doing research by all means become a professor, otherwise think about perusing a different focus. If you REALLY wanna teach you can be an adjunct, but it’s like 5k a class. Professors are required to teach 3-4 classes usually, but they make double if not triple that per class.

Be a professor if you’re 1. Good at teaching people 2. Nice to students. So many professors aren’t good with the part where a student may something stupid or not understand-don’t get frustrated

Become a teacher! Maybe look into adult education if you don’t wanna do k-12

Add to that the competition, the academic exclusivity, the fact a Ph.D takes like 6 years, and the shitshow of a mess that research and getting published is, and honestly most people struggle aligning their passions for teaching with the umbrella of research in higher ed.

I think you’re missing the idea that there are different kinds of higher ed institutions and so different requirements to be a professor. I doubt many community colleges are doing much “research” and many colleges exist on a continuum between that and what you describe.

I do think smaller private colleges or community colleges would let you focus more on teaching
