See with the state gov system I’m at, it’s based on the merit system. So once you are past probation, they can’t fire you if your job disappears. They’ll find something for you to do. That’s how we got a permanent employee in our office whose full time job is scanning old paper documents into digital storage
The issue is, we have a computer services department, and apparently my supervisor had asked them for this a year ago and they just never got back with him. This is how I’ve now ended up as the person my entire office goes to for any task thought of as “tech” related. So we have computer people, they just don’t do anything
As someone who interned at a college and got to see how the sausage was made it was kinda eye opening. 9 IT people for all of campus (3-4 of those were helpdesk), my building houses the presidents office, so everybody was always fighting to be in there. Swear somebody new moved in every week. I basically installed printers for all of them, because IT quoted them a month turn around. Fascinating shit.
