I’m a freshman, or will be a soph majoring in CyberSec. Thinking abt getting into bug bounties and learning how to hack? Should I bother? And where should I start for the free resources.

you wont ever get into the field unless you literally commit a high profile cybercrime. guarantees you a job once you get out of jail. I majored in cyber security and graduated in ‘21, never found any entry level job for it.

Before you start, it’s extremely competitive because the people in this field tend to be extremely obsessive. Also, most jobs typically have an optional degree requirement, so you’re competing with people who have 20+ years of IT experience as well as those w/ advanced degrees

It's a huge industry that has super high demand for people who actually have skills. It's hard to navigate because the companies that do this sort of work are super low-key

Mostly Electrical Engineers, Computer Engineers, Physicists, Mathematicians, and internet community folks are working it

Csec degrees are practically useless. Professional script kiddies. Best chance is to work for some scammy pentest firm like Rapid7

Everyone says to do HTB or tryhackme, which are both great resources. However, if you don’t have an IT background and you don’t know how computers work, you’ll just be learning tools without any real background. I’d recommend starting with background info like OS, C programming, and networking. Once you have a baseline in those, go study for the CompTIA Security+ cert. you don’t necessarily need to take the exam right away, but the information is a great baseline to branch out into other topics
