It’s a good thing but not necessary. You really need one after junior year… maybe during your down time during the summer, try doing a couple projects if you’re not doing an internship

It depends on the rest of your resume IMO. Lots of projects, good student, involved with stuff that’s NOT TECH, taking the harder/less common electives? You’re fine. Doing nothing besides going to class and forking repos? You might have a harder time

I’ll disagree with some of the dudes here. Don’t be too hard on yourself if you’re struggling to get an internship. A TON of places only accept upcoming seniors and even if not, you’re competing with upcoming seniors for the same jobs anyway. The system is set up against you in a way. I highly reccomend trying to find a shitty IT/Helpdesk position if you’re struggling for an actual dev internship

If you’re trying to go faang/unicorn startup then it’s really good to have one. With that said I got a job I’m pretty happy with that pays really solid money without one. Your mileage may vary

i unfortunately agree. it doesn’t need to be glamorous tho. i worked at some random company doing ai, and compared to my amazon friends from my school, applications have similar success rates for anything minus different faang

Yeah I mean it’s obviously going to be better for your resume to have another internship but you can absolutely find a job without one after your sophomore year

Something that you’re interested in! Club/intermural sport, music, art, book club, volunteering, board game club, etc. frat/sorority too. Literally anything not related to CS. Shows you have a life outside of work

idk if those help that much, but i’m also not sure. have been a student athlete at my university and then stopped. it’s still better than before, but i’m also older now. i’d probably see it if i had nothing, but i do here recruiters saying they want this (not as important as high school tho)

Every single interview I’ve had has mentioned it. I got FT at a big tech company, and they asked about me being in band. They want people with soft skills and interests because you are who they’re spending 8 hours a day with. They’d rather have someone interesting than a technical wizard who doesn’t communicate. Clubs show you can work with others, commit to meetings, and survive socially
