can someone explain to me why I should start building a résumé by coding projects? I find the whole thing trivializing due to the fact that everyone would be doing the same stuff.

I think it’s more about showing employers you have drive and some experience coding larger projects (which is especially important for students who dont have a lot of professional experience) Plus depending on the topics it can be good talking points. Pick one of your hobbies or interests and just find a way to connect it to coding

I get that it’s supposed to show you know what you’re doing, but isn’t that what the interview is for?

Well what else are you going to put on your resume? McDonald’s? Even internship postings get 100+ apps, applying with nothing isn’t rly an option unless you know someone.

The biggest thing is to pick an interesting project and something in line with your hobbies. Don’t build a todo app or some vibe coded crap and not know the basic ins and outs of it. All interviewers will ask about them and they can be a great talking point.

It’s not about what you have built, but the fact that you can put your head down and build it. You’re not demonstrating the end goal but your ability to chase down and finish work.

Projects that are interesting to you, personally, are the best ones to do. You’re more likely to complete them in a shorter period, they’re more likely to fuel your drive to learn, and they’ll inform a career based on completing projects that will use those skills as a foundation later.
