TIL Northern Europeans (Scandinavians) are the most resistant to HIV as as 10-14% carry the CCR5 Delta 32 genetic mutation which is so effective in resisting the entrance of HIVs CCR5 co-receptors that its now being used in stem cell transplants

And yet Northern Europeans do not practice circumcision (male genital mutilation forced upon boys in the USA / Middle East / Africa ) One of the common fall back rationalizations for forced genital cutting is “less HIV transmission” but those studies are faulty and based on African patients with limited access to sex safety and education

I do want to note that this is in all likelihood just coincidental rather than an adaptive mutation. HIV only jumped to humans within the last 100 years, so prior to then there would be no adaptive pressures for HIV resistance.

No. Actually HIV was transmitted to humans via the polio vaccine. The polio vaccine was cultured in organ tissue from infected primates.

Why are you mentioning circumcision and transmissibility in relation to genetic modifiers. If a baby boy was born with the genetic mutuation that doesn’t suddenly go away if they circumcise him

Circumcision is also very unpopular in east Asia and there is no trace of the mutation among Asian individuals so what’s the correlation you are attempting to make?

The most common theory (not proven), is that it was purposeful evolved as a counter for the black plague in the 14th century. Which would mean it was an adaptive mutation. But again this is just the leading hypothesis not fact so you could be right

Yeah I guess if that was the case then this would be considered an exaptation: a trait evolved for one purpose but which was useful for something else.

Okay this is just an anti-vax lie. Polio was originally cultured in rhesus monkey cells before switching to HeLa cells. The simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) strains that jumped to humans and became HIV both originate in Central African apes, not in macaques.

An early strain of polio vaccine did have a contamination, with a macaque virus called SV-40. That’s completely different from SIV and significantly less dangerous than SIV. Once SV-40 contamination was noticed, testing was implemented.

Once again, SV-40 is completely different from SIV. I suspect you are blaming SV-40 for HIV as some anti-vaxxers do that. The impacts of SV-40 are very well studied, it does not cause AIDS. Genetic studies indicate that at least the common ancestor of HIV-1M originated in the 1910s, before polio vaccines were developed.

Circumcision is a violation of of bodily autonomy and needs to be banned for boys the same way that it was banned for girls 30 years ago. HIV transmission rates are not a justification for forced genital surgery on a non consenting person, although pro circumcision people will try to say that it is a valid excuse.
