and during the siege of Ma'arrat al-Numan in 1098, multiple contemporary chroniclers, including some from the Crusader side, recorded that starving Crusaders butchered and ate parts of the dead after the city fell, making it one of the best-documented episodes of cannibalism in medieval warfare.
