Too many people are obsessed w being mentally ill. It’s not cute & there’s actually more to ur identity than ur mental illness but if you like being defined by that- more power to you I guess?

That’s how I feel about SOME people when it comes to being LGBT. One of my best friends is a lesbian but it’s not her entire freaking identity. She acknowledges that she’s more than who she likes to sleep with and she’s a really awesome and inspiring person

I don’t *like* being defined by it, but it does end up being a trait that defines you whether you like it or not. It severely affects livability and most of the time social interaction, even if you try to resist it it’ll always be there.

I feel like people take normal stress and issues that humans have always been dealing and putting complicated names on it. Doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try to address it and talk about it because for a long time people didn’t and it was awful. But stop going around and bragging about it. Talk to the people you trust about it but don’t wear it like a medal.

I mean for some of us, it is a core part of who we are because what we can and can’t do is defined by it. I have OCD that makes it to where I struggle with going out to eat or eating at other people’s houses, being near anyone with allergies, etc. I also have Schitzoaffective disorder that effects my finances, my ability to drive, and overall socialization due to hallucinations

there are debilitating mental illnesses that are more than “normal stress.” and there’s still real shame around mental illness so if people feel comfortable to wear it proudly, there’s nothing wrong with that. mental illness affects a person’s entire life, their day to day experience. i’ve actually never gone a day without an OCD intrusive thought, even as a kid, and it sucks. people should be able to confidently discuss their disorders instead of hiding in shame

I’m gonna put on my nuance cap here for a moment. I actually do get why some people seem to make being queer their whole personality. Particularly why young teens do this. When you’re young you want to try and find a way to define yourself as unique, special, separate from your peers. The easiest way to do this is through some immutable characteristic about yourself that only a select population shares in common. Thus, you get people defining themselves through their queerness

upvote 27 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> #11 1d

There’s some diversity internally even here. Not everybody who defines themselves through their queerness is a teen trying to figure out who they are and how they should relate to the world. Some people genuinely just believe their queerness to be an incredibly core part of their identity, which is fine. Even if it annoys you, it is ultimately fine for someone to end up like this. Regardless, it’s important to allow for people to express themselves, even if it’s in a manner you may find annoying

upvote 15 downvote
user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> #11 1d

Same thing applies to people who make “mental illness” their entire personality. Still doesn’t make it right lol

upvote 7 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> littlepenis_never_dies 1d

I mean, it also doesn’t make it wrong. It’s neither right or wrong inherently to have immutable or even temporary characteristics be an essential part of your identity in and of themselves. It can be healthy or unhealthy depending on degree or *how* it informs your identity, it can also be actively harmful to others depending on how it informs your behavior, but it’s not inherently wrong. It’s typically at worst annoying or just a part of figuring out your identity

There are a lot of people who struggle w mental health, which is different from mental illness- but people popularizing mental illness causes a lot of self diagnoses & potential medical diagnoses bc people become convinced something is wrong w them & medication is the only solution. Few people analyze their lifestyle & thought processes enough

I hear you. Having SMI is really difficult but once you can manage it better you realize you are so much more as an individual than what ur experience has been & where those intrusive thoughts have led you. it’s easy to live in ur head when there’s a lot going on up there! No hate & no shame. Just try not to exclusively define ur self as someone who’s mentally ill. You have interests, disinterests, relationships you show up in, etc

Oh yeah while I do have interests and hobbies, I don’t think it’s unusual for someone with a SMI to talk about or bring it up often because it is central to our life. Mine is as managed as it can be in regards to medication and therapy so it won’t get better than it is currently, or atleast not significantly so. So if I’m dating or making a new friend, I prefer to be upfront with my limitations and why they exist
