To be fair step 3 is crucial for both sides. So much “at least we aren’t them,” even the politicians are campaigning off of “pick me, I’m not that guy/girl”

The flip side is Repubs didn’t want an old school guy, they didn’t want an established politician. They wanted someone to shake the tree (or drain the swamp, as they say) and that’s what they voted for. Very much like Democrats with President Obama as the fresh political face that promised change. Repubs like having Democrats screaming “Orange man bad” and they love how crazy Democrats get with every tweet and bill that pushes back on the social progressivism that Democrats have championed.
