And on the topic of misogyny, the stereotype is that men want control of everything and can’t respect boundaries, including with dogs and cats. Dogs can be trained pretty easily, cats not so much. Cats will also let you know very quickly if you’ve crossed a boundary. Dogs are generally more lenient with personal space and overstimulation. Dogs are also perceived as more loyal and affectionate than cats.
But if you respect a cat’s boundaries consistently, I find them to be just as affectionate and clingy as well socialized dogs, and emotionally intelligent. My one cat will come lay on my chest if my partner and I are getting too loud (usually laughing) because she thinks I’m upset and need comfort. My other cat always watches me dry my hair because he thinks the hair dryer is scary and hurting me.
dogs HAVE boundaries tho, they just state them much more subtly and gently than cats because they know theyre big and scary to us. 9/10 instances where a dog "bit without warning" were 40 instances of a dog stiffening, lip licking, yawning, and giving wall eye before it finally got fed up. kinda like how women dont always say an obvious "no" when a man theyre not interested is coming onto them. we know we'll get punished for being assertive, just like dogs are punished for growling
anyone who has ever owned a dog will tell you that training them is much easier than other animals, but not "easy". they are not little robots who do whatever we say. training a dog takes time, effort, patience, and a relationship built on trust. if they dont like you they wont obey commands. hell, most dog trainers are women and/or butches, because a lot of dogs inherently distrust men and become aggressive around them
and cats can be trained. they can be affectionate and social just like most dogs. i like them but i dont really love the idea that you cant set boundaries that a cat will follow, like training them not to walk on counters or eat off plates. "cats will be cats" but what if they eat something they shouldnt like onions or grapes?
Maybe I didn’t explain that well. Cats are routine based learners, dogs can be trained with easier to grasp (and quicker) methods like through rewards or punishment. Cats don’t easily respond to either, and they’re so smart they’ll figure out the rules and intentionally break them. They follow patterns, not commands. They even domesticated themselves, unlike dogs which were manually domesticated by humans. Cats don’t live to please their owners
dogs learn WAY better through rewards than punishment tho (in fact punishing your dog is a really good way to make them do the thing you dont want in private when you cant see them). also, dogs kinda domesticated themselves too. they were eating our trash and meat scraps, found out we had weak ears and noses, so theyd make noise and alert of us large predators at night so we'd defend their food for them
and anyway, this is getting off topic. none of your points make dogs sound like a "man's" pet. i dont really think most men want pets at all (especially not one with higher needs). i just think dogs fulfill all the things men say women need them for (protection, companionship) and only ask for food and shelter (and ear scritches) in return instead of sex and obedience. plus giving us freedom to walk around at night safely and chasing away cat callers
