A lot of people should be paid more than athletes, but society holds them to such a high regard for some reason. They do nothing for the average person other than provide entertainment

Footballers are paid that kind of money to slam their heads into each other at full force solely for our entertainment and live with lifelong CTE.

Athletes shouldn’t be paid. It’s just a hobby

teachers being underpaid doesn’t mean doctors can’t be underpaid relative to footballers. both can be true at the same time.

i mean athletes are one, such a minor fraction of the population, specifically ones that are well paid, and two, it’s a entirely privately driven industry. unlike medicine or education, so unless you’re gonna radically change how that’s structured this just doesn’t make sense

im specifically talking about athletes for sports that have healthy viewership, stuff like ice skating aren’t exactly well paying anyway is guess

i get that top athletes are paid from the revenue they generate. im not confused about economics. im making a moral argument that society rewards entertainment more than essential professions. and i don’t think that’s a good thing.

I don’t hate that argument as long as it applies to all forms of entertainment, acting and musicians too. idk in my head it’s a lot easier if you go after high income and wealth regardless of profession, especially since those fields are so far removed from public expenditure in general

fair point, I mostly took issue with you leading with physicians. lots of essential industries that have it far worse imo

so media execs should keep the revenue? idk the amount of sacrifices that athletes put in personally and physically prob deserves SOME type of compensation

op said physicians because normally those are the ones at the top of the totem pole for healthcare workers

hm. then my hot take is all entertainers should be paid more or at least have access to a more stable income regardless of how popular they are/what kind of income they’re generating off their works. people like talking down entertainment as if it’s not what makes their otherwise drab life more enjoyable, like they don’t come home after work to watch movies, and then don’t want to pay the people who make them properly…

that said, of course, everyone regardless of profession should just be paid an actual livesbke wage, and then we can scale up and down depending on various factors 🤷🏾 wouldn’t mind if it was the case that doctors were being paid more than entertainers overall. but entertainers shouldn’t be made to starve either.
