i mean religion serves an important social role in bringing people together (for example, many people hating someone brings those people together) but people downplaying the harm organized religion does to people cannot be reasoned with most of the time

The world is better off without killing robbing and raping sure. Anyone can do those things “in the name of anything”, that doesn’t make the thing apparently bad. If I say I am going to rob a store in the name of you, does that make you a bad person?

People, sadly, also do that of their own secular beliefs. I’m not heavy into religion, however I can say for many people it has offered positive aspects including, but not limited to, hope, purpose, guidance (towards positive things), self empowerment and humility. They’ve only brought bad that people would soon bring upon themselves. Wars would happen regardless; religion just became large enough for us to cite them as religious rather than rooted in contemporaneous politics age human nature.

That’s not true silly. If that was the case, religion would’ve been dissolved decades ago. Yet it persists. Because religion is not simply the antithesis of science. It’s deeply rooted in psychological and sociological frameworks as well. And religion isn’t just this rigid unforgiving structure you guys make it out to be. There is no one way to “be religious,” so I suggest you guys stop trying to make it that way. Some religions can be more open ended and interpretive rather than as-is.

Interesting, so the “Christian” God branches from the “Jewish” God, two totally different frameworks yet both are stated as being “the word of God”. Not only that, how had science proven that a man, Jesus who was a Jewish teacher, can also be divine? You see, the interpretation that Jesus is God didn’t even exist before he was even born. So now you have a framework to praise God alone, and another where you can’t get through heaven without believing in Jesus as your savior—different ideas on God

Yep. It’s such a double standard and they know it. They are here arguing and telling me I’m the one who’s wrong but I’m not the one that’s delusional and I’m using my free speech the same way that they are so why is it wrong for me to exercise that freedom? Haha it’s ironic isn’t it? Atheism isn’t the concept that separates people, it’s religion that has always been doing that through human history. Why are we supposed to feel separated? The brainwashing is instilled within their minds.

Last thing, people fight over beliefs not religion. Religion is a form in which it comes, but the conflict is always beliefs. You can see this in politics, everyday interactions and altercations, etc. Why do people protest against police brutality? This conflict isn't religion, it's what people believe to be right and wrong. To solve the issue you cite as being caused by religion, we would just have to get rid of all beliefs. As long as humans exist, we will fight over beliefs, whatever form.

all of those forms of oppression weren’t created by Abrahamic religions, they were perpetuated by it. and you say it “contradicts modern day science,” but that’s only true for fundamentalists. these criticisms are extremely misinformed and distract from the genuine issues with Abrahamic religions.

attacking people for their beliefs when it doesn’t affect you is genuinely hypocritical when one of the main criticisms on Abrahamic religions is evangelism. if you’re going to criticize religion, do so without perpetuating harmful rhetoric.

there is much of the universe outside our understanding. I personally know a Christian physics professor who studies dark matter and energy since it’s a tangible example of the intangible. It’s proof that there’s more we don’t understand. Science doesn’t “disprove” Christianity, and those who believe it does are ignorant, whether they’re religious or not.

also can we focus on the actual issues with many of those who practice Abrahamic religions? calling out oppression and discrimination is more important than acting like you can “disprove” a spiritual belief system.

Science doesn’t disprove religion or God, no but saying ideas don’t change through society while stating sociology is funny because that’s why there’s so many denominations and in the first place. Also, we can state professors all day, as I study social behavioral sciences and my clinical professor could for sure tell you how Shiva helped someone out the other day 😂

Yes we can focus on them. Those beliefs were interpretations by the Jewish people—their own fears. Paul removed the Jewish law and universalized it. The Roman Empire instituted Jesus’s teachings for control and authority, Christianity was brought over to the Americas, etc. back then if you disagreed with authority, you’d literally be killed. Instead of killings in today’s world, it’s just shame instead and conformity.

I was disproving it? I was saying that religion does shift over time and could decrease. Doesn’t make it false, there’s just more and more studies trying to figure out with tools we didn’t have back 2000 years ago.
