Melanosomes, which are microscopic organelles that contain various amounts of melanin (simply put, it’s pigment) is actually fossilized in some cases, each color has its own shape. By looking at the melanosomes in modern birds and comparing shapes, we’re actually able to determine the color of some specimens. For example we found that microraptor was a similar color to crows, with black iridescent feathers covering its body :)
