I would like to add a little to this, your kid shouldn’t be obese. Then shouldn’t be fat after the age of somewhere like 10, just because I know as a kid how much I fluctuated in weight up until that point so I can see how you can have a larger child but once their metabolism levels out that’s when they should not be fat.

As someone who’s fat, I saw it as a choice between fat or raging alcoholic and figured fat was the lesser of the evils. Not saying it’s right, just saying sometimes there are bigger battles to be won.

iPads wouldn’t be the full issue by itself but a lot of parenting can lead to this. Also fat is incredibly objective. I was considered obese in middle school because I weighed 165 and 4’10. I had terrible self confidence but looking back on the picture I looked normal? I think I work a size 12-14. I had barely any pudge. Most of the weight came from my developed chest, and muscles from farm work but that doesn’t matter in terms of BMI

and they shouldn't not be fat because they're just insecure and have/are getting an ED. they should know when to eat and not to eat, they should have the option to go walk or play outside regularly, and ideally they should be fed nutritiously

Yall can downvote me all you want but I would not describe a girl with this body as obese. The military doesn’t even use BMI. They use Body Fat % using measurements. Not weight.

I was 13-14 due to starting school late but also, as you can see, my body size was completely normal despite the weight number. I had an average diet and did farm work. I was not lazy nor eating junk. It is just how my body was. Muscle weighs more than fat. And yk what farm work gives you? MUSCLE. The BMI scale is terrible and inaccurate to actual bodies that are complicated. It’s archaic.

Overweight sure. But weight fluctuates a lot during adolescence. Again, BMI would’ve had me labeled as bordering morbidly obese, which is obviously inaccurate. But slightly overweight is drastically different than obesity.

There are numerous upon numerous videos on the internet that talk about inaccuracies of BMI. Especially with children (girls more so) whose hormonal changes causes crazy weight fluctuations. And plenty of women have issues with BMI if they have larger chests. My tits alone weigh close to ten pounds. Women are CURVY. Kids are hormonal. Weight is not an accurate representation of people’s bodies. Period

There are plenty of medical issues that can cause weight gain that is hard to lose (hypothyroidism, Cushings, PCOS, or medication like antidepressants and birth control) and unfortunately you have to eat to live so if you gain 0.2 oz everytime you eat that is about 45lbs a year. Off very little weight gain per meal— and that’s only doing 1 meal per day btw

That would be 4.6 pounds💀 14 ish for 3 meals a day. Idk WHAT MATH has you thinking 0.2 oz * 365days gets you to 45 pounds 😭 you’re also not factoring in that only 28% of children get regular exercise. That is a parental issue. Quit trying to make excuses for people having overweight children.

Sorry I meant 2oz not .2 oz but my point isn’t that parents don’t have overweight kids but blaming parents without knowledge of the circumstances isn’t right either due to WHY they could have increased weight outside of healthy habits, such as medical issues or medication. Also a lot of parents with school age children only provide them with ONE meal 5 days out of the week as breakfast and lunch are served AT SCHOOL. School age children (outside of summer) consume more food at school than home

Not to mention, some schools don’t provide PE after a certain age. I no longer got PE at my school after 6th grade. And children spend about 1/3 of their awake time per week at school so school that don’t provide an PE could be at fault vs the parents alone
