Yes you literally have too, and it’s not pick and choose, you have to give meaning to things because it won’t make sense bc language norms where different at creation and different at translation and other translation and other translation, it’s also known that King James Bible is known for changing words. It’s all what you believe and I know most Christians would probably agree, it’s abt just being a good person.

ok so. i feel as though christianity isnt compatible with feminism because of the repeated themes of female submission and an imbalance of power between men and women throughout the bible. i gave some verses to back this up. would you disagree?

upvote 3 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> OP 20h

I can justify yes, direct translation it holds merit. But that isn’t what happens in churches or modern Christianity, it is what is perceived due to the translations and changing of words throughout the bibles history, therefore, I disagree, because those verses aren’t values held by modern Christians.

Anonymous replying to -> #5 20h

Once more, my background is very limited because I am a Jew. So if u ask me abt direct meanings, I couldn’t confidently answer, but I can answer based off of what I know talking to Christians and logic based off of history.

upvote 0 downvote

Anonymous replying to -> #5 20h

i understand that. but can u see how that can sound like cherry picking? EVERY christian can have their OWN interpretation of the bible, every denomination, every church, etc etc etc... do u see how that can be difficult to pin down? so instead of referring to millions of anecdotes, i looked directly at the source material that their faith is based on, which we can both refer to. based off of the source material alone, im sure we can agree that men & women are not equal.

someone choosing to not follow specific verses doesnt make the verse go away. people deciding to ignore it doesnt change the fact that it WAS followed, and often is STILL followed

Yes but u can then argue that u are basing your belief on direct translation it when you even said your self is loosely based in modern Christianity and interpretation. i see the point ur making. yes, most christians BASE their faith in the bible without following every verse line by line IDENTICALLY. my point being, is that its a gamble. theres so much variety. someone may only follow 2 verses, someone may follow just the new testament, or just certain books- but the common denominator is that they all follow the SAME BOOK. yes, that is a generalization of millions of people. but it is not baseless. because their book LITERALLY says these things.

therefore i dont believe its unreasonable for a feminist or egalitarian person to be wary of christians (or any religion for that matter), because their foundational texts EXPLICITLY STATE sexist beliefs MULTIPLE TIMES. do you see what i mean? furthermore, nonreligious people are statistically more likely to be feminists than christians (unsurprisingly)

I see what your saying, but that would mean your whole argument is flawed, The fact that this is a generalisation of modern Christians or religious people is based off of a direct translation (of which you took the direct linguistic meaning of) which you agreed to say is baseless in their beliefs or at least most beliefs for all Christians. When it isn’t true, not all Christians believe in the “anti feminist” direct teachings of the Bible, it is some. - better said, you say all when we both

i dont like men who uphold anti feminist values- and MANY of those men have OVERLAP with religion, which i proved. it just isnt smart (statistically) to for a women with feminist values to get with a man whose foundation of his faith, aka the bible, is in opposition to feminism but are there outliers? yes. are there cherry pickers? yes.

The statistic said “more likely” it doesn’t say anything about percentages or actually give me evidence to prove correlation. It could be 1% more it could be that they interviewed 3 ppl. Check your sources. From the snippet I was shown it could’ve been taken from rural parts of Tennessee (old boys state) Trust me, I’m not tryna be like that but that seems to be an inherent problem with most ppl and sources they find online. 😭

Anonymous replying to -> OP 19h

Exactly the point I’m making it’s cherry picking and discriminatory based off of something that isn’t necessary true for everyone in a category. The point I’m making is you can’t justify hatred for another person for a non exclusive category they fall in, when the problem isn’t the category, it’s the subjects on belief. One can be Christian and not hate women one can be Christian and hate women it’s not exclusive. Many also does not mean more than average, it just means the ppl you’ve been near.

How so, this is a complete a valid argument, questioning a source? Any lawyer any teacher any attorney would agree that is a valid thing to ask. Also regardless, still doesn’t justify saying all people in a category believe the same, when each interpretation is individualistic and different, as you’ve agreed. Shit you might be right some ppl are more likely to be anti feminists but category isn’t the determiner, it’s like saying women are more likely to be left handed, shit there might be many

You may be able to use them sure, but that doesn’t mean they are valid and sound when pertaining to the argument whatsoever. Also politicians ? Really ? U mean actual fucking supervillains ? They twist the words of god to support their own beliefs and out dated traditions, not only that they leave a bad face on Christianity. Everyone can see that. There is no excuse for them. The majority of their support comes from those older and the senile who reflect those views because that’s what they were raised with. Don’t ship politics with religion that’s not fair especially when in the us there is supposed to a separation of church and state.

upvote 2 downvote

when politics is becoming more and more shaped by religious views, i have to ask the question- what are the values that unite the millions of voters? what do they have in common? why are billions of dollars being sent to israel? why are they so involved in our politics... and it boils down to christianity. it's not every christian, but it's always A christian. do you see my perspective?

Anonymous replying to -> OP 17h

Don’t need to, I’m being logically sound. The problem is with the argument itself. Also what about Christians who are women, are they not feminists just because they’re Christian? Regardless, of if they are or aren’t more likely to not be feminists your still mixing up sufficient and necessary assumptions and furthermore, the argument alone would be is it fair to assume all Christians and all religious ppl are anti-feminists? The answer regardless is no.

upvote 4 downvote

Anonymous replying to -> #5 17h

I’m too tired to argue as of now, but I will say we are arguing in two distinctly different spheres, you’re worried abt the context I’m worried about the argument itself. If you wanna say that it’s a personal preference to stay away from religious ppl that’s fine but u can’t assume that they are all antifemenists.
