Oop, okay, so our girl Harriet Tubman was a Methodist Christian, and you know how many of our people she led to freedom? I fear that you have had some bad experiences with religious folk, and you are generalizing (Which isn’t a good look for us, queen. It is, in fact, quite hypocritical).

This is how I feel a lot and now I feel like I can’t trust the religion I’m trying to integrate into

Faith was a source of inspiration and hope from oppression for our ancestors. I think you have it pretty twisted

Nope, it was used to colonise and control and sever ancestral connections and traditions.

just cuz she was a christian doesn’t mean she wasn’t affected by people using it to oppress her, a lot of people in religion choose to ignore those like that but it doesn’t erase the damage they did

And yet you have things like the Holocaust or the colonisation of the Americas and Australia, all in the “name of god”.

So what damage did Christianity have on Miss Harriet? How was she negatively impacted by it. I feel like one could say the opposite of that, really. I would say, in my opinion at least, that she was POSITIVELY impacted by Christians (she was one herself, after all). She claimed that she used God as her assistant when helping free the slaves. I’d say that’s pretty positive. I can agree, she was oppressed. It is the unfortunate way of our world. I deal with oppression every single day at a PWI

No, I meant Australia 🇦🇺, where Indigenous people were wiped out and subjugated and disconnected from their cultures and languages, just like in the Americas. Happened to Aotearoa, the kingdom of Hawai‘i, the list goes on and on.

Ah, I do remember that. I apologize. I read your comment quickly and don’t fully comprehend. I apologize for my rudeness.

I’d say bless your heart, but that proves the point of how (unfortunately) deeply integrated Christianity is in our community.

she credits god for freeing these people when in reality it was HER commitment that made the change, honestly that itself could show she thinks she might be less than just based on religion but either way this is one person with a “positive” impact while there are hundreds of communities that were oppressed “in the name of god” which wouldn’t have happened if there wasn’t religion

while you can definitely make this argument, it ignores the ways christianity can be used to harm people, such as by making them believe that suffering inherently has meaning and makes you worthy, and that certain human emotions and behaviors are inherently sinful and punishable by eternal torment

there definitely are a few religions that aren’t inherently harmful (not many though, i can only think of two) and it can for sure be a useful tool for people to find meaning in their lives. ngl i don’t understand how it can be helpful to some people but it definitely is
