My boyfriend’s mom calls him daddy and I just think that’s really weird.

probably the same reason why your mom would call both you and your dad “honey” it’s a hispanic thing if you get it you get it and if not then you don’t, anyone who is hispanic understands that their parents call them “papi” if they’re a guy

Just sounds like a whole bunch of emotional incest being excused by “culture” but okay

Yeah, that’s really weird. Absolutely no one in my boyfriend’s entire family calls their children “daddy” in any capacity.

I never said my boyfriend's family does this. In fact, I specifically said they don't. So why would I break up with my boyfriend over something his family doesn't even do? Some things are genuinely unusual, and sometimes unhealthy family dynamics get defended as culture when they really aren't. Even people from those cultures will tell you that mental health issues often go untreated and therapy is heavily stigmatized.

Calling your kids hijo, hija, mijo, mija, papi, or other common family nicknames is one thing. A mother calling her son "daddy" in English is another, and people are allowed to think that's odd without being told to "get used to other people's culture."
