Floyd’s past had nothing to do with what the cops did to him in that moment. He died because of police abusing their power. That’s why Floyd is honored with statues. Robert E Lee led a seditious army. He should be taught about in History classes, that doesn’t mean he deserves a statue. He’s not a martyr.

Because I’m sure you remember there was pretty clear footage of what happened to Floyd that went viral. Like I said, he’s a martyr. His murder brought attention to the issue of police overreach. His record is irrelevant. Having prior offenses doesn’t give cops the excuse to dogpile you. You’re still a citizen with rights.

Furthermore, not only have similar statues been made from other tragedies of police overreach, there is no statue of George Floyd in the Smithsonian. So I’m not really sure why you brought him up.

I don’t think Confederate monuments should be put in public spaces unless they are properly contextualized, such as in a museum. It should be explained how Confederate monuments have been used to romanticize and whitewash the history of the Confederacy.

Holy shit. I already told you. Having prior offenses does not just revoke your rights as an American citizen. A criminal is still an individual. There’s no excuse for what they did to Floyd even if they had a warrant for his arrest.

Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery were two other black people killed by police that same year and were both pretty prevalently mentioned in the protests. The fact that you know all this stuff about Floyd and not the others is making it pretty obvious where you get your news from.
