It seems illogical to talk about an entire racial group as if all members are personally responsible or all react the same way

The Irish show how the history of racism and imperialism is nuanced and how you cannot put entire ethnic groups into categories of “always oppressor” or “always oppressed.” Were the Irish oppressed by the British? Yes. But there were also Irish slave owners in the Caribbean, many Irish officers served the British colonial army, and Irish immigrants perpetuated racism in the United States. Simultaneously, Irish labored on Caribbean plantations alongside black people.

Were native Americans oppressed by white america? Obviously. But the Cherokee and other tribes had black slaves, slave plantations, even slave catcher patrols. This coexisted with the reality that black people ran away from Carolina plantations to join the Seminole tribe (who would later shun their black members as racism took hold).

Black people were obviously extremely oppressed in America, but black soldiers joined the U.S. army and assisted in the taking of native land during the Indian wars. There was an effort to settle former “Indian territory” in Oklahoma with black people in the hopes of turning it into a black-majority safe haven from white racism. The west was full of black cowboys, but cowboys were a vehicle for the destruction of native territory.

So the reality is that history is complicated and ethnic groups are not rigid set categories. An ethnic group can oppress in one circumstance and be oppressed in another. Members of an oppressed group can ally themselves with an oppressive government, or can revolt against it. People aren’t monoliths
