There needs to be a school-life balance, just as there should be a work-life balance. People need time for themselves and their families. It’s important for people to have hobbies and friends, as well as time to engage with them. Saying that students have nothing better to do is a very close-minded take. It’s actually unhealthy to dedicate all your time to school or work, or just one thing in general
I agree that students shouldn’t be using AI, however, it’s important to identify the reason so many students are resorting to it instead of simply punishing them. My argument is that teachers are assigning too much work, most of which is busy work, and that leads students to use AI. They use it out of frustration or because they aren’t understanding concept that weren’t taught properly. The reading comprehension and critical thinking skills should be taught, practiced, and honed in classrooms.
80 hours a week means more than 10 hours of work a day, all seven days a week. It’s not recommended to work that much for anybody. I work with kids—mostly high schoolers—and I’ve witnessed the detrimental effect of having that much work. Also, most of the best work will happen in the classroom with the teachers guidance. Outside of the classroom, the students might make mistakes, struggle with focus, and be overwhelmed.
