But throughout evolution, the brain intentionally switched off pain receptors in nerves near stomach lining because the feeling of immense pain from acids eating away at your stomach lining whenever you eat was too much of a risk of sending your body into shock and eventually killing you that it had to rewrite anatomy to fix it over generations
But even millions of years later, the human body didn’t think it was necessary to evolve to eliminate the pain from cramps from periods despite how intense it is. Evolution decided digestion was too much to risk so it cut off some pain receptors but not for periods although it’s likely that the hormones connected to estrogen might enhance the severity of pain receptor signals during periods the same way people with higher testosterone feel significantly worse from being sick
Yes and no. While the nerves aren’t directly exposed which is why they’re protected by multiple tissue linings, stomach acid is still able to do a lot of chemical damage directly and the stomach is able to survive cuz the tissue needs to be specially adapted and constantly defended which is what the brain has to specifically defend against
And stomach contractions can generate substantial process but don’t usually damage tissue as often cuz of the combination of the structural design of the tissues, the coordinated contractions and the reinforced healthy blood cells and connective tissues. Contraction damage isn’t a weak force, it’s just in the tissue’s tolerance range that without it could do some serious damage which is what the brain had to specifically develop throughout evolution
Menstrual cramps are painful because when the uterus’s outer lining is being shedded the body temporarily cuts off oxygen inside of the uterus to safely remove the lining without causes uncontrollable bleeding or possible internal bleeding. If the body didn’t remove the oxygen the uterus’s lining would still be active leading to damaged blood vessels and tissue. The body views cut off of oxygen as life threatening regardless of the reason so the brains sends pain signals, hence: menstrual cramp.
1. Menstrual cramps are not mainly caused by the brain interpreting oxygen cutoff as life threatening. The main cause is biochemical signaling and uterine muscle contraction. During menstruation, the uterine lining sheds cuz hormone levels like progesterone fail which releases prostaglandins which cause strong uterine muscle contractions, compressing small blood vessels in the uterine wall, reduced local blood flow in contractions and inflammatory signaling/PAIN SENSITIZATION
My primary focus when it comes to intellect is empathy and critical thinking which most guys don’t have. No fault of their own- it mostly has to do with the centuries of patriarchal conditioning that was created by some bastard who is probably atoning for their sins in the pits of hell. Regardless, I am sick of it and am choosing to live a life of emotional celibacy. ( Because I’m a sex addict)
The temporary reduction in blood flow produces localized ischemia which is reduced oxygen delivery which contributes to cramp pain BUT the reduced oxygen is more of a symptom of the contractions and vascular constriction which the body isn’t intentionally causing or else it would balance it out with more hormones to soften uterine muscles to soothe the process based on evolution with other mammalian species who have less painful experiences
5. This was never meant to be an argument. I wanted to talk about this theory which is why I asked about it and while we both had wrong points and I do realize in hindsight that we couldn’t have evolved based on digestion itself being painful so it would’ve been maladaptive earlier on so you did prove me wrong to an extent so I did have a fun convo about it cuz I like talking to people about this stuff so I’m sorry you reacted badly to it that wasn’t my intent
I appreciate you man. Thank you for the explanation. I use the word argument lightly as my expertise are in ethics and philosophy where all statements regardless of it being true or false are seen as arguments. No malice was intended. I am not knowledgeable enough to say whether you are right or wrong about the menstrual process (haha 😐) but we can agree that the Digestion process at hand is something that isn’t inherently painful and never was?
I realize I was wrong mainly due to maladaptive process cuz multicellular life had achieved it long before even animals existed which I didn’t account for so the only ones who did would’ve been cells immediately killed off from internal dissolution instead of early mammals like I assumed. I just thought our method of digestion was a fairly unique process which is why cnidarians deviated into gastrovascular cavities
But given that there is a system of routes designed to protect the stomach layer from stomach acid like the tissues and mucus, any leakage which would be rare that happens to bypass the system equivalent to water in the wrong pipe would be since this type of thing does normally lead to ulcers or inflammation of some kind when it comes into contact with unprotected areas of the body
Basically stomach acid has a PH of 1 which is slightly less than battery acid so if we just straight up dipped our finger into it, we’d feel the results almost immediately with damage to the outer skin causing irritation as chemical burns emerge from breaking down proteins and lipids in the skin like basic digestion would normally do and would feel akin to an intense burning as permanent tissue damage occurs over prolonged exposure. There is more I want to look into about this now
