“why do you use ‘yall’ if you aren’t from the south” because I grew up in feminist circles and I always had friends who were critical of “you guys” as gender-neutral language 😭
i just say yall cuz its fun and easier to say. i live in the northeast but i say it a lot

Because y’all is a perfectly acceptable contraction, just like any other!

I say y’all all the time as someone not from the south. I also say y’aint, which I’m pretty sure I read on a subreddit one time as a contraction of y’all and ain’t. I don’t really know why. It just works.

i feel like there was a slight racist or anti southern mentality when my teachers would tell me yall wasnt a real word

hard agree. so on the flipside I do also kinda understand why some people might sideeye its usage, fwiw. especially with AAVE appropriation and whatnot

yeah I think “y’aint” is immediately legible when I hear it outloud, people just type it out less often ig

Oh yeah I’ve never used it in a text conversation before. Definitely an out loud only kind of thing.

Amn’t should be accepted by the population

SAME! My momma used to tell me to not speak with a southern accent cause people said I’d sound uneducated. Well, today I just presented my first neuroscience poster at a conference with my southern accent absolutely blaring :)
