I don’t mind my taxes going up if it means everyone can afford healthcare. We were put on this earth to help people.

Here’s the thing: Israel has a free universal healthcare America doesn’t. Israel has a free higher education America doesn’t. Paid Parental Leave, National Child Allowance, the list keeps going. Many people think that the war between Gaza and the Israeli government started on OCT 7th but no one talks about what happened on October 6 5th 4th and the list keeps going. A day before the war Israel bombed a school the day before that they killed a child and the list goes till l 1948. 300B+ a year

As long as we also put heavy taxes on sugar/ultra processed foods and use the taxes to subsidize healthier options then I’m ok with it. In a country with universal healthcare the healthiness of the population matters a lot since it’s directly correlated with how much we spend on healthcare, I’m not sure your average American can take on that sort of responsibility though.

Take the money I pay to insurance companies. I pay it to gov instead of some shareholders. Bang. Everybody gets healthcare and we can bracket it by income. Just better system.

Our taxes wouldn’t even go up. It’s just propaganda to make people ignore the stupid shit our taxes actually goes towards.

lol I find this “increase tax” funny. Literally the entire tax + other revenue never covers the total spend. They just print the money to pay for it. heard the term deficit.? that’s what it is. So they don’t have to increase taxes. All they have to do is print more.

The bottomless money pit of healthcare. When are people just going to accept the time they have is limited and start making the most of it now with the money they have instead of prolonging the inevitable

I do not understand the point you’re making. Are you advocating for us to dissolve the entire healthcare system and stop researching medicine?

and what abt people who are lower-income or live in areas w/ limited access to whole foods?? where I live, dg market is the closest place to get food and everything else is 30+min away (and even then it’s just a walmart or smth). my ONLY options for bread are considered UPFs. canned soups are often UPFs but u housed people don’t have the option to buy perishable ingredients and make their own batch of soup

Well that wouldn’t be a problem if we would disincentivize making shitty processed food, pesticides, etc. and incentivized making food that’s actually healthy.

When are people realizing we wouldn’t have to do that if we had a government that cares about its citizens?

making one thing more expensive won’t make the other thing cheaper or make your money go further. it will not solve the access issue in food deserts or for people who lack a way to refrigerate things. also processed doesn’t automatically mean unhealthy

also all those alternative milks everyone likes to say are healthier and more environmentally friendly vs cow’s milk are ultra-processed bc they have things like emulsifiers, stabilizers, and sweeteners added to them

The reason they have limited access is because our government subsidizes crops like corn, soy, wheat, cotton, peanuts, and rice. Most of those crops are used in the fillers and sugars that are a large part of peoples health problems. If we instead taxed those unhealthy products and subsidized the healthy ones stores will naturally end up carrying healthier options because it will be cheaper. As for homeless people that’s an entirely different problem

And trust me, I know what processed means, I brew my own wine. And we can do a lot more than making unhealthy food more expensive. If the people control the food and the people control the industry, the people will do what they need to do for the interest of the people. The problem is that we think we can just let corporations operate however they want with restrictions in place to keep them in check. They will still choose the outcome that’s best for their profits 10/10 times.

After thinking about it some more I think the economic argument I made here is poor. A healthier population will live longer putting a bigger strain on social security. I suppose you could have people work longer but who wants to do that? I still stand by my main point though since I think making a population healthier is good in itself
