Dubai Chocolate is so good, but seeing influencers making such a big deal out of it but saying nothing about Islamophobia or oppression directed to the Middle East bothers me. Like you enjoy our food, but won’t say anything when we’re bombed? You enjoy our culture but you’re fine with corrupt corporations and governments taking our resources and colonizing us? If you’re going to appreciate our food, you also need to acknowledge that we’re actively being colonized and oppressed.
I just don’t agree with people enjoying someone else’s culture while not acknowledging what their people are going through. And they don’t have to express their political views, they can simply inform people about oppression. If a group of people is suffering, and you want to enjoy their food and clothes without acknowledging them, I truly think it’s disrespectful to the culture. I’m okay with people enjoying other cultures and they should, but they should do it respectfully
All countries have a bad history of something. People should be allowed to enjoy different foods without needing to constantly involve themselves in politics, especially when they’re not really qualified to do so, nor are people necessarily qualified to publicly talk about what goes on in countries/cultures outside their own. It’s weird to essentially gatekeep food unless they preach about a different country’s affairs. Food is meant to be shared and enjoyed by everyone.
