For tribal African society, a fever is often the sign of a person's demise. Also it often has a more severe connotation than just a common cold as with yellow fever (malaria).

He gets super concerned because he doesnt know how easy it is to get over a fever with our medical system. They dont have ibproufen or most remedies we have, they literally go to a witch doctor

Yes malaria was called the white people (muzungu) illness. They have adapted to malaria but fevers are very life threatening still
